Siem Reap, Cambodia – 7D6N (Part 1: Mountain Biking) 🇰🇭

(Overdue post)

Two reasons why I decided to go to Siem Reap:

  • Cheapest option to get away from Thailand (1,550baht)
  • Ann (volunteering farm friend) + boyfriend were there

8 July 2015, Wednesday

Met up with Ann and Jacob – so glad to see them again after a week! We went into town to hunt for food.

Decided on having an authentic local experience and choose a roadside stall.

I love instant noodles! They cost USD1.50.

Jacob was sitting at Blue Pumpkin, working, so we continued walking around and explored Pub Street a bit to wait for him to be done. It was nice to be back at a familiar place and nothing much has changed since 2013! The corner store at one of the streets still sells Happy Pizza.

Ice cream man! It's similar to Singapore's - bread with ice cream.

Costs 2,000kip ($0.50). Tasted a bit weird though. The baguette bread was a bit tough and the ice cream... just tasted odd.

Ann and Jacob rented an Airbnb apartment so we tuk tuk-ed back to their place to rest and hang out. Ann and I also planned and decided what we wanted to do the next few days.

The guesthouse I was staying at was ~1.3km away from their place. I wanted to walk back to save money on transport (things are not cheap in Cambodia for a solo backpacker!) and these two were so sweet to walk back with me to make sure I was safe, then took a tuk tuk back.

9 July 2015, Thursday – Mountain Biking!

After much deliberation, Ann and I finally decided to stick to our decision to mountain bike the countryside despite the rain.

Ann picked me up in a tuk tuk around 11++am and we went into town to rent Giant mountain bikes! Ann’s French host recommended us to go riding. The route was straightforward – just follow the river.

MUD. MUD EVERYWHERE. Impossible to ride into. It became a kids' playground - slipping and sliding away.

Rain started to get heavier as we rode back. Luckily there was no heavy downpour!

All-time favorite banana-chocolate rotee! There's so many names for it in different countries - prata, pancake, rotee, etc.

Ended the day at Pub Street and headed home early to rest and shower! We were both drenched in rain, sweat, and mud.

We went to Angkor Wat the next day. I’ll do another post on that – it’s going to be really image heavy!

Till then!
